The Universe Speaks: Emergence and Synchronicity
I love science. I love all true things. It is truth that some things, which should be random, happen in ordered and decidedly non-random ways. Order almost always arises spontaneously from chaotic systems. The above photograph is a flock of starlings, they are spread out in the air over 150 yards and no one starling can see more than a few others as they fly yet they act as a single organism executing instantaneous maneuvers which cannot be explained by visual cues or variations in air pressure. In biology this is known as the “Doctrine of Emergent Properties” and is found through out the natural world. Emergence also is seen in non living systems in our study of particle physics and cosmology.
Moreover, events, which can only be explained by “coincidence”, occur but in significantly meaningful ways. This is known as the “Doctrine of Synchronicity”. The “butterfly effect” whereby a minute change in one part of a system, say the flap of a butterfly’s wing, effects another part in a significant way, say the formation of a rain cloud miles away. We have learned, through mathematical analysis, that every event is related, in a real connected way, with every other event. Moreover, we have learned through quantum mechanics that the observer and the observed are not separate and that the mere act of observation changes the outcome of the observed event.
Thus, the observation of seemingly “random” events can provide real meaning. Chaos, is merely an illusion, the universe is intimately ordered. The appearance of effect without cause only flows from our inability to see all of the causes in a world of nearly infinite possibility. When these forms arrange themselves in meaningful patterns we do ourselves a disservice by merely dismissing them as meaningless coincidence or random chance. There is no such thing as a “meaningless” coincidence. The universe speaks to us if we but have ears to listen.
