An executive is a person whose job is making decisions. Yet, they don’t teach this in our universities. Many people go through life not knowing how to make a decision simply because nobody ever taught them. I intend to remedy this right here.
All decisions are choices. That is action is required of you and there are at least two actions available to you. Coffee or tea? Paper or plastic? War or peace? How do we make the right choice?
First clearly define your options. You can’t make the right choice unless you know what choices are available. Second, do as much investigation as you have time to do. Some decisions will by necessity have to be “snap decisions” because there is just no time for investigation. In this case go with your “gut” feeling. If you do have time ask people you trust, research the issues, look at how others decided when faced with the same choices and how it turned out. How will this choice affect others? Will this choice keep your future options open or close them off?
Then make your decision and stick with it. Second guessing is worse than useless it actually makes things much worse. If later on new information arises then it is okay to modify your position but in the short run make your decision, run with it and accept the consequences either for good or ill. If you make a mistake you can at least take solace from the fact that you chose with the best information available to you at the time. Learn from the mistake, fix it and move on. There is no use in beating yourself up about it.
There now we are all ready to be the CEO of a Fortune 500 company,
